Doctor of Dental Surgery

Texas residents are required to apply through the Texas Medical and Dental Application Service.Application for the first year classes of all The University of Texas System medical and dental schools are processed by the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service. Applications are accepted between May 1 and October 1 of the year preceding anticipated matriculation, and must be made on current year's official forms available from the Application Service. Early submission of the application is encouraged.


The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston classifies transfer students as applicants enrolled in dental schools accredited by the American Dental Association and advance standing applicants, as graduates of dental schools not accredited by the American Dental Association. Both transfer applicants and advance standing applicants will be considered for admission only if space is available in the appropriate class. Preference is given to Texas resident applicants.

Requirements:

  • $30.00 non-refundable application fee payable to UT Health Science Center at Houston, prior to consideration.
  • Applications must be submitted, along with all required documents no later than March 1 of the year of entry.
  • All eligible applicants will be considered by the Committee on Admissions subject to the following requirements.

International Dental Graduates - Graduates of Dental Schools not accredited by the American Dental Association:

Requirements, which govern the admission of advance standing applicants to the second year, are as follows: ·

  • Must not have been out of pre-doctoral dental school for more than five (5) years at the time of acceptance or must have completed a two (2) year postdoctoral program accredited by the American Dental Association within the past five (5) years.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Applicant must provide adequate translations (if applicable).
  • DAT Scores (required from all International Dental Graduates)
  • Must have passed Part I of the National Board Examination. Part II scores are desired.
  • Must have completed three (3) years of predental studies satisfactorily or have taken the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test (GRE). Information may be accessed at gre-info@ets.org. UTHSC-H Dental Branch school code is 6906 or 6907.
  • Applicants from countries where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Information may be accessed at toefl@ets.org.
  • A letter of recommendation from the Chief Administrative Officer of the college, university, or dental school in which the applicant was last enrolled.
  • An interview will be required prior to an offer of admission. Those selected by for interview by the committee will notified.
Individuals who graduated from an international dental school more than five (5) years before submitted their application for advance standing or who have not completed within the past five (5) years an accredited postdoctoral program of at least two (2) year duration are not eligible to apply for advance standing admission.

Re-admission

A student who voluntarily withdraws or is dismissed from the dental program and subsequently applies for re-admission will be considered on an individual basis by the Dental Admissions Committee.

Transfer Students Applicants enrolled in Dental Schools accredited by the American Dental Association.

Requirements, which govern the admission of transfer students, are as follows:

  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Applicant must provide adequate translations (if applicable)
  • DAT Scores· National Board Scores (if applicable)
  • A letter of recommendation from the Dean of the dental school in which the applicant is enrolled.
  • Curriculum of the school attended must be compatible with that of The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston.
  • A personal interview is required before the Admissions Committee will consider the completed application.
  • No transfer beyond the third year.

Students accepted into this program will pursue the prescribed dental course of study and be required to complete satisfactorily published graduation requirements for Doctor of Dental Surgery candidates.

No plan for admission or reporting to The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston should be made until official written notice of acceptance has been received. Before the Committee on Admissions will take action on the application of a candidate, the following credentials must be submitted to the UTHSC-H Office of the Registrar.

All prequisites need to be completed by May 31 prior to the Fall semester enrollment.

Requirements:

  • Completed application form along with the thirty dollar ($30.00) non-refundable application fee.
  • Official transcripts showing all previous college work completed and in progress. Electronic transmission is preferred by the institution directly to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Office of the Registrar.
  • Letters of Recommendation. Three (3) letters must be on the institutional form provided and sent directly to the Office of the Registrar, by the recommending person.
  • All prequisites need to be completed by May 31 prior to the Fall semester enrollment.

Official Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) score report showing successful completion of all sections. Applicants who provide proof of completion of 3 semester hours of college credit prior to Fall 1989 or have a composite score on the TAAS, ACT, or SAT at or above the level set by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board are exempt from submitting TASP scores. Additional information and application booklets may be obtained from any university admissions office, or by writing to our Office of the Registrar.

Applicants from countries where English is not the native language and did not attend a U.S. High School are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Information and application booklets may be obtained from any university admissions office, or by writing or calling the Office of the Registrar. A minimum score of 550 points (in written form) or 213 points (in electronic form) is required.

Applicants who have completed part or all of their education at schools outside of the United States must submit their official transcripts for a course-by-course descriptive evaluation through the Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc., P.O. Box 92970, Milwaukee, WI 53202-0970. ECE must send the evaluation directly to the Office of the Registrar.

APPLICATION DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 1 FOR STUDENTS PLANNING TO ENTER THE FOLLOWING FALL. All prequisites need to be completed by May 31 prior to the Fall semester enrollment.


Persons wishing to enroll in The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston for postgraduate programs are requested to submit the following documents. Your application will be processed when all the required documents have been received.

ALL applicants should complete a PASS application for the Advanced Education Programs. Applications for PASS are obtained online at:

Requirements:

  • A completed application form and a statement of application (see the end of the application).
  • A recent photograph (suggested size 2" x 2").
  • In addition to any academic transcripts sent to PASS, official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended including dental program must be on file one year prior to enrollment in the Postgraduate School of Dentistry. (Transcripts are on file if you have attended any UTHSC-H school. Check with the Office of the Registrar.)
  • Official Dental National Board Examination I and II scores are required for all programs. (Scores are on file if you are a graduate of the UTHSC-H Dental Branch DDS program. Check with the Office of the Registrar.)
  • Dean's letter of recommendation. Letter should be forwarded directly to the Office of the Registrar and must include cumulative grade point average and class standing if these are not shown on the official transcript.
  • Three letters of recommendation in addition to the Dean's letter are required. Letters of recommendation from PASS are acceptable. Applicants who graduated more than two years prior to this application may submit letters of reference from fellow practitioners in the community or from their supervisors if employed by any government service.
  • Satisfactory scores obtained on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The GRE may be a requirement of graduate programs and may be required for some postgraduate programs. General information and testing dates may be obtained by calling the GRE Testing Service at (609) 771-7670 or Internet: http://www.gre.org. Applicants should verify with the program director whether the GRE is required. NOTE: GRE scores need to be sent directly from the Testing Center on data disks and may take up to 3 weeks for us to receive scores from ETS.
  • Applicants who are nationals of countries where English is not the parent tongue are requested to submit scores from the TEST OF ENGLISH AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL). General information and testing dates may be obtained by calling the TOEFL Service at (609) 771-7500 or Internet: http://www.toefl.org.
  • Those applying for General Practice Residency (GPR), OMS, Orthodontics, and Pediatric Dentistry must register with the MATCH. General Information may be obtained by calling the MATCH Service at (416) 977-3431 or email at dentres@natmatch.com or http://www.natmatch.com/dentres/index.htm.

Deadlines per program:

The deadline for applications to the Endodontics and Periodontics programs is August 15 of the year before expected enrollment.

The deadline for applications to the OMFS program is September 15 of the year before expected enrollment.

The deadline for applications to the Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry program is October 1 of the year before expected enrollment.

The deadline for applications to the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) and General Practice Residency (GPR) is October 15 of the year before expected enrollment.

The deadline for applications to the Prosthodontics program is November 1 of the year before expected enrollment.
